Can You Claim VAT on Expenses Before Registering? Here’s What HMRC Allows

20 October 2025

If you’ve recently registered for VAT, or you’re about to, you might be wondering whether you can claim VAT back on purchases made before registration.

Good news: HMRC allows you to reclaim VAT on certain pre-registration expenses, as long as they relate to your business and meet a few simple conditions.

What You Can Claim VAT Back On

HMRC’s rules let you reclaim VAT on:

• Goods bought up to 4 years before registration, which you still own or use in your business.
👉 Example: You bought a laptop or tools two years ago and still use them – the VAT is claimable.

👉 Example: Stock purchased for resale, which you haven’t sold by the VAT registration date – the VAT is reclaimable since you’ll be paying VAT on the sale of these items.

• Services (like accountancy, web design, or marketing) paid for within 6 months before registration.
👉 Example: You paid for branding or bookkeeping help a few months ago – the VAT on that can be reclaimed too.

The Conditions You Need to Meet

To reclaim VAT on pre-registration purchases:

1. The goods or services must be used for your business (not personal).
2. You must still own or use the goods at registration.
3. You need valid VAT invoices for each expense claimed.

How to Reclaim Pre-Registration VAT

You include the reclaim in your first VAT return after registering.

Keep clear records for everything claimed as HMRC may ask for evidence.

A Quick Example

You started trading in January and registered for VAT in October. You bought:
– A laptop in February (£1,200 inc. VAT)
– Stock in March (£6,000 inc. VAT) — you’ve since sold £3,000 of it
– Website design in April (£600 inc. VAT)

When you submit your first VAT return, you can reclaim VAT on:
– The laptop (still in use so qualifies under the 4-year rule for goods).
– £3,000 worth of the stock (that’s the portion you still held at registration.)
– The website design (service within 6 months).

You can’t reclaim VAT on the £3,000 of stock you’ve already sold, as it’s no longer on hand when you register. That means your total reclaim is based only on goods and services still held or used by the business at the registration date.

That’s a VAT reclaim of £800! This will be deducted from your total VAT liability, and potentially generate a refund.
